Quest for Fame -

Viscount, yet another Group 1 winner from the Eight Carat family, was Champion 2 Year Old in the 2000-2001 racing season after his wins in the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. Although he failed in the Golden Slipper, he was clearly the dominant juvenile, evidenced by his win in the Champagne Stakes, when looking set to win with incredible ease, he shied suddenly at the seagulls on the track, veering out wildly, almost unseating jockey Rod Quinn in the process. Despite this, he recovered to still win by over a length. As a 3 year old, Viscount won the Group 1 WFA George Main Stakes, defeating the perennial Group 1 bridesmaid Shogun Lodge, before travelling to Melbourne where he won the Bill Stutt Stakes under lights at Moonee Valley. Although he started favourite, he was unplaced behind his stablemate Lonhro in the Caulfield Guineas. He made amends though with a superb run for third behind Northerly and Sunline in the Group 1 WFA championship, the WS Cox Plate. The Woodlands Stud have labelled him a 'tragedy beaten' in the Cox Plate in their recent stud advertisement, after he suffered severe interference when badly squeezed between the two older horses. He protested unsuccessfully, although his connections remained adamant that he should have won on protest. He then ran a tired race in the VRC Derby to Amalfi and was sent for a spell. Viscount had only the one start in the autumn before a minor injury saw him prematurely retired to stud, being considered too valuable to risk, which was a great shame. He is by the successful stallion Quest for Fame, out of the Eight Carat mare Antwerp, and is a superb near black individual, who should do well at stud. He joined a growing casulty list of class 3 year olds to depart this spring, including Viking Ruler, Amalfi, Lonhro amongst others to go amiss during the autumn. |
