I have to admit I take no pleasure in posting these Doncaster photographs, because Over beat my favourite girl Sunline. However, there is no taking away from what was a very fine and tenancious performance by a very good quality 3yo, and an equally good ride by the Melbourne jockey Darren Gauci.

After showing his potential late last spring when he won the Carbine Club Stakes on Derby Day and the Sandown Guineas, Over triumphed in the $2.5m Doncaster Handicap, in what was the biggest win in jockey Darren Gauci's career, when he defeated the champion New Zealand mare Sunline. Despite a gloriously brave run by the mare, who had to concede the 3yo a staggering 6kgs in weight, Over gradually wore Sunline down, who had led most of the way down the straight. In a truer display of respective ability, at their next meeting, the week after in the All Aged Stakes at WFA, Sunline scored an effortless win, with Over some 6 lengths in her wake.
