An enigmatic and injury prone galloper, Northern Drake, after showing much promise, finally broke through for a Group 1 victory in the 1999 Caulfield Stakes (WFA). His best performance prior to this fine win was a second placing to the great Might and Power in the 1998 Cox Plate, beaten just over a length. He firmed to favourite for the Cox Plate a week later, but did not face the starter due to a niggling hoof injury that refused to respond to treatment. VRC stewards then ruled the horse out of the MacKinnon Stakes on Derby Day, and the horse was badly in need of a run when he was finally unplaced on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. He is off to Hong Kong after a game display to run 3rd in the Sandown Classic.
