MAHOGANY

Last Tycoon (IRE) ~ Alshandegha (USA)
FOALED:  1990

Mahogany retired as a 7 year old in 1998. He was a Group 1 winner in almost every season that he raced, winning 2 Group 1s as a 2yo in Queensland, the Sires Produce and the Castlemaine Stakes, he won the Caulfield Guineas, VRC Derby, Australian Guineas and AJC Derby as a 3yo. He then proved more effective as a sprinter, after going amiss as a spring 4yo. He won the Lightning Stakes as a 4yo in 1995, and ran Octagonal to a neck second up in the Cox Plate of the same Spring. He then returned to win his second Lightning Stakes in the Autumn of 1997, and the inaugural AJC Endeavour Stakes. He was one of Australian racing's most versatile performers, and one of very few horses to win two Derbies and 2 Group 1 sprint races during his career. Add to this his "Guineas" wins as a 3yo and his 2yo performances, he was a truly remarkable horse. He was trained throughout his career by Lee Freedman, and held a special place in that trainer's affections. He was primarily ridden by Greg Hall, and the two had a great affinity, with Greg also very fond of the "old horse". He was owned by the Williams and Packer families, hence the different colours he sometimes carried throughout his career. As evidence of his remarkable durability and versatility, I have many winning photographs of Mahogany, and he always received very popular "welcomes" from the crowd each time he won.
