Lolita Star

Jeune (GB) - Hutt Star

Foaled:  1997

Following the tragic death of Unworldly, this year's crop of three year fillies did not really produce a stand out, which is often the case.  The classic races were won by different fillies after Unwordly broke her leg in that tragic track gallop.  Before that, Unwordly had threatened to take all before her.  Raced by Crown Lodge, she was an unlucky third in the Silver Shadow Stakes (won by Ateates), before reeling off successive wins in the Tea Rose, Furious and then the Group 1 Flight Stakes.  As I was down in Melbourne following Sunline, I did not ever get to see or photograph Unwordly, which is my one great disappointment of an otherwise successful 2000 Spring Carnival.  After her death, the fillies races lost a lot of their appeal.  The Thousand Guineas was won by All Time High (sired by Flying Spur), then the Wakeful Stakes was won by Lolita's Star, who then started favourite for the VRC Oaks.  The filly, by the former Australian Horse of the Year and Melbourne Cup winner, Jeune, appeared to stir up badly before the Oaks, and although finishing strongly she failed by a short margin to overhaul the Inghams' Lovelorn, who perhaps fittingly won the VRC Oaks in a stirring finish, a race that for all intents and purposes, probably would have been won by Unworldly.
