Intergaze recorded his first Group 1 victory in the 1996 Champagne Stakes, and was well performed as a spring 3yo, running narrow seconds to Alfa in both the Caulfield Guineas and AAMI Vase. In the autumn of 1997, he won the Canterbury Guineas in runaway fashion, and then ran the narrowest of seconds to Tarnpir Lane in the Rosehill Guineas, then 3rd to Ebony Grosve in the AJC Derby. He finished in front of the great Might and Power in both of these races. His 3yo career finished on a high note with another Group 1 win (his third) over Octagonal in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. His 4yo campaign was interupted by injury, and at one stage it looked likely that the horse would be retired to stud. However after attempts to place this beautiful entire at stud, he returned to the track and something like his best form when he ran Might and Power to a length and a half in the 1998 Group 1 Doomben Cup. He next reappeared in the autumn of 1999, as a 5yo, and campaigned first in Melbourne, then Sydney. He ran second twice to Istidaad, in the St George Stakes and then by half a head in the Group 1 Australian Cup, and his frustrating run of placings continued when Tie The Knot defeated him in the Group 1 Mercedes-Classic by half a length. He broke through, finally and popularly, for his 4th career Group 1 win with a bull-dog effort in the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick. He then cemented his "giant killer" repution when he spoiled the "match-race" between the 3yos Sky Heights (3rd) and Sunline (unplaced), where he also gained revenge on Istidaad (2nd) for his narrow Australian Cup loss. Intergaze then journeyed to Brisbane, where he avenged his defeat by Might and Power in the same race the previous year, with a fine win in the Doomben Cup. Intergaze has since proven that he is much more than a giant killer, in fact, Widden Stud, after announcing that the 8 times group 1 winner would stand there after his retirement, is calling him "The Giant". His 6 year old year has been tremendous. He defeated Tie the Knot in the time honoured (Group 2) 1999 Chelmsford Stakes, then powered to victory in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes. He then appeared to train-off slightly, with unplaced runs in the Caulfield Stakes, Cox Plate and MacKinnon Stakes. Intergaze returned in the autumn of 2000, and after a brilliant first up 3rd behind Redoute's Choice in the CF Orr Stakes, he led all the way for a runaway victory in the Group 1 Australian Cup, run at Flemington at WFA. His win was enormously popular, and gave his connections great satisfactions after his very narrow 2nd to Istidaad in 1999. Intergaze proved himself one of the 1990s best WFA and older performers, and he must be ranked very close to horses like Octagonal, Saintly, Might and Power and Tie the Knot. His connections announced his retirement to stud (Widden as mentioned above) on Wednesday 17 May 2000 after he failed to recapture winning form after his oustanding Australian Cup victory. |
