A late maturing three-year old,
Hit the Roof (NZ) was to some perhaps a surprise winner of the Group 1 VRC
Derby, when he defeated Universal Prince (who had already won the Spring
Champion Stakes in Sydney) who ran second, and Skalato who ran fourth. Hit
the Roof's previous start was probably an indication that he was a good thing in
the Classic, when he ran the closest's of seconds to the Chief's Crown colt
Royale Exit in the Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield. The winner of the
VRC Derby often comes via this race, and the winner only just caught Hit the
Roof on the line. Glen Boss was the rider, and Hit the Roof was also a
popular winner, because he was bred by the same connections that bred Darion
Powers, the grey Andrew Hoy rode so superbly to win his third successive gold
medal in the Sydney Olympics team Three Day Event. Andrew Hoy lead the
Derby field out on non other than Sub-Zero, to the delight of the large Derby
Day crowd, and posed afterwards with the winning connections.
Hit the Roof looks to have
returned in great form this autumn, when he resumed with a fast finishing and
close up third in the Group 1 WFA event, the CF Orr Stakes.
