Fairway resumed in the autumn, and won the Hobartville Stakes in emphatic fashion when second up, and then scored a resounding all the way win in the Group 1 Canterbury Guineas, run for the first time at night under lights. A natural leader, he was never troubled, and skipped away to win handsomely. He then turned in an inexplicable performance, when he ran the worst race of his life on a slow track in the Rosehill Guineas. After again having a seemingly easy time in front, he compounded on the home turn to finish near the tail of the field. Connections pushed on with the Derby, after Denham could find nothing amiss with the 3yo, and he started at the generous odds of about 11/1. This was the real Fairway though, and on a good surface, albeit after a very easy time in front, he bolted away to win the Derby from the luckless Shogun Lodge, who, like his trainer's former star Danewin and Tie the Knot, finished 2nd in both the Victoria and AJC Derbies. Fairway resumed slightly disappointing performances in the Spring, before he travelled to Melbourne for his first start down south. With Darren Beadman on board, the horse bounced back to his best, and jumped to Caulfield Cup favouritism, when he staged a titanic duel with the champion mare Sunline, narrowly winning by less than a head. |
