One for the girls! The New Zealand combination of Sheila Laxon and her brilliant staying mare, the 4yo Ethereal re-wrote the record books last spring, with dramatic wins in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. I was too pregnant to be at Flemington on Cup day, but do have some images taken by a good friend. I am proud to say, however, that I did manage to do the Caulfield Cup when I was 36 weeks pregnant, and after being worried I was losing my edge because of being tired and pregnant, I managed to pull some of the best images I've ever taken of the mare winning at Caulfield. After capturing the Cups
double in the spring, Ethereal had a couple of unplaced runs in Melbourne before
she scored an exhilarating last stride win in the Group 1 WFA BMW Stakes at
Rosehill, nailing Universal Prince (last start winner of the
Ranvet Stakes, and the AJC Derby) on the line. Sadly, the race also marked
the grand end of the old warrior Tie the Knot's racing career, who when trying
to become the only horse to win the race on three occasions, struggled into 5th
place. His connections announced his retirement a couple of weeks later. |
