He first came to note on Caulfield Cup day in 1994, and then won the Cups double in 1995, repelling a decent international assault and giving Damien Oliver his first victory in the Melbourne Cup. Doriemus then proved himself adaptable to weight for age, when he won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and ran a fine second to Juggler in the G1 Doomben Cup. In the autumn of 1996, Doriemus bled when last in the Australian Cup and was sent for the compulsory 3 month spell. He returned to again contest both Cups in the spring of that year, but while running well, he didn't place in either race, after winning the Turnbull Stakes in the early spring (I think it was this year!). In 1997, partnered now by Greg Hall, he ran 2nd to the great Might and Power in both Cups, and managed to get desparately close in the Melbourne Cup, with jockey Greg Hall sure he had got the bob of the head on the line. In the autumn of 1998 Doriemus again performed well, and was narrowly defeated as top weight by the then 3yo Tie The Knot in the Sydney Cup after being soundly beaten by Might and Power in the Mercedes Classic. Doriemus contested the Cox Plate where he was unplaced (and outpaced, again to Might and Power), and was retired from racing after finishing at the tail of the field in the 1998 Melbourne Cup. It however may not be all over for Doriemus, a recent report said the horse was doing well and may return in the Spring of 1999, again aimed at the Cups. Doriemus was trained by Lee Freedman since 1995. |
