Hurricane Sky
|
Desert Sky, a 3 year old gelding from the beautifully bred Hurricane Sky's first crop of foals, has come from nowhere this autumn. He has put together a string of wins, that started in the Autumn Stakes (G3), that has amazed his owner and trainer. His improvement has been nothing short of incredible, his connections feel it is since they removed the blinkers from the gelding. After he won the Autumn Stakes, he led all the way to land the Group 1 WFA CF Orr Stakes, in a bulldog effort to win narrowly after defying all attempts to run him down. Desert Sky then missed the G1 Cadbury Australian Guineas, but then confirmed the CF Orr form when he contested the Futurity Stakes. This race has been dominated by 3 year olds in recent years, being won by the outstanding 3yos Mouawad (Octagonal's little brother) in 1997, Encounter in 1998, and then Testa Rossa in 2000, which was actually a 3yo trifecta, as Miss Pennymoney and Redoute's Choice ran second and third. Consistent with the previous results, the 2001 running of the Futurity was dominated by the 3 years. Desert Sky and another (also late maturing) 3 year old Mr. Murphy battled it out down the straight, and for the first time in the history of the Futurity Stakes, they dead heated for first. These photographs are also available for viewing on Mr. Murphy's own page on this site. Desert Sky was ridden in both Group 1 wins by Darren 'the Gauch' Gauchi. I haven't heard what is
planned next for this game, handsome little horse. His owner David Moodie
admits to being perplexed as to what to do next with him. I think it is
most likely that the horse will go for a spell, but as the owner said, how do
you throw a horse out into a paddock that is winning Group 1 WFA races!
Nice little horse! |
