A popular grey gelding, Cangronde, trained by Cliff Bashford in Gosford, won a series of sprint races in 1997. He was initially rated the "next big thing" in sprinting, but through a number of mishaps, and perhaps not travelling well and settling in on the larger racedays, did not quite live up to his reputation. He did however run Mahogany to a length in the 1997 Lighting Stakes when second, and ran fifth to the speedy Spartacus in the Moir.
