The Golden Slipper of 2002 was a fairytale result, when the gutsy Queensland filly Calaway Gal overcame the brilliant and game filly Victory Vein, who subsequently won the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce and Champagne Stakes. Calaway Gal, bred by M Caldwell, is trained by Bruce Brown, who's 2 young sons were sporting caps with Calaway Gal on them, and wearing the filly's racing colours. She had come to Sydney unbeaten, then ran into Victory Vein in theSweet Embrace and Magic Night Stakes, finding her too good on both occasions. Ridden by Scott Seamer, who won 4 races on Slipper day, including the BMW on Ethereal, Calaway Gal turned the tables on Victory Vein. No doubt her favourable barrier draw helped, with Victory Vein coming from barrier 12 and having to work hard early, and only going down by a head, but Calaway Gal is a tough and gutsy filly. She found Victory Vein too good for her at her next start, however, when unsuccessful in the AJC Sires. |
