Blackfriars

Danehill (USA) - Kensington Gardens (NZ)
FOALED: 1996

Blackfriars, a full brother to the useful Waterford Road, was bred by Robert Sangster and is trained by Colin Hayes. A strong, well built and extremely handsome colt proved the toughest colt of the spring with a gritty performance to win the VRC Derby, defeating Shogun Lodge (he had to survive a protest to do this). He has won the Norman Robinson Stakes at his previous start, which has been a good guide to the Derby in recent years. It capped a very successful spring for jockey Greg Childs, who a week later had partnered the brilliant Sunline to an all the way win in the WS Cox Plate.
