After showing initial promise as
a young horse down the Flemington straight, Black Bean has become one of
Australia's leading sprinters in the last 2 years. His Group 1 form began
with a very close second in the 2000 Newmarket Handicap to Miss Pennymoney, with
subsequent Hong Kong Sprint (Group 1) winner Falvelon
third. Black Bean then recorded his first Group 1 triumph, on Easter
Saturday 2000 when he prevailed over Danewin's
full brother Commands in the AJC Galaxy by a head in a thrilling finish.
Black Bean's next major victory was in the Emirates Classic, down the Flemington
straight, where he has proven to be very effective. He went to Hong Kong
to compete in the race won by Falvelon, but was controversially withdrawn when
he tested positive to a substance allowed in Australia but banned in Hong
Kong.
Black Bean returned home to Australia, and although winless this 2001 autumn preparation, he ran a close 2nd in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes, then an honest 5th in the Futurity Stakes, before another 5th in the Newmarket Handicap where he carried equal topweight. I would think that the horse will be taken to Sydney to defend his Galaxy title at Easter, although it is not out of the question that, following his start in the Futurity Stakes, he may target some WFA races, possibly even those over longer distances. At some stage it may be that, given his good record, that his handicap weights become too much, particularly in light of 57.5kg in the Newmarket, where as mentioned he ran a game and close up 5th. It would be nice to see him tackle a race like the Manikato Stakes in the spring, although he could then run into a major stumbling block in the form of the champion Sunline, should her connections elect to take the same path to the Cox Plate as they did in 2000. |
