Arena has been touted as a Group 1 horse since he appeared as a 2yo in the lead up races to the 1998 Golden Slipper. He matured into a good strong 3yo, and won Group races such as the Gloaming and Hill Stakes, at WFA. He then travelled to Melbourne, and after being placed in the Norman Robinson Stakes, a traditional Derby lead-up, he then won the Victoria Derby in fine style, from another very promising Zabeel 3yo, Sky Heights. Arena is trained by John Hawkes, and is owned by the Ingham brothers. He has been partnered in most of his 3yo starts by Larry Cassidy.
